Hair loss due to overstyling

Aerosol spray, hair dyes, blow dryers, hair tongs, straighteners, heated curlers and wands as well as the use of hair extensions, hair colours and other styling products might seem to be essential to hair beauty in the short term in the world we live in today but despite their many advantages, misuse and excessive use may result in damaging hair in the long run resulting in hair breakage and thinning.

Gwyneth Paltrow loves Viviscal
It seems that increasing numbers of celebrities are using hair supplements to provide their hair with the nutrients it needs.  Actress Gwyneth Paltrow also uses these special supplements to feed her hair and keep it in great condition. When speaking to vogue.com, Gwyneth said that she swears by a steady supply of Viviscal hair growth supplements, which recently helped her bounce back from an unfortunate Brazilian keratin incident that left her with serious breakage. She said: “I started taking hair growth tablets, and I see a crazy difference.” She said emphatically: “It beyond works. I want to buy stock in that company.”

And Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Jenkins take Viviscal, too, to help manage the effects of frequent styling. Another well known fan, singer Debbie Harry recently said: ‘I thought of going natural and having silver hair at one point, but as long as I’m pulling Blondie out of the hat, I have to maintain my character. ‘I won’t use dye that contains ammonia — it burns my hair. But I’ve had to bleach it for a very long time, so it’s not done too badly, considering. I swear by hair vitamins.’

In fact, hair straighteners, blow-drying and curling tongs are among the worst culprits for damaging hair as it can actually make hair frizzier, causing it to appear thin and dull. This is because many styling appliances operate with temperatures of over 200 C, which is beyond the temperature that the hair’s natural molecules, especially keratin and amino acids, can withstand without causing damage. If going completely cold turkey on them is just too much, why not try and limit your use of heated appliances to just weekends, while investing in a good quality heat protection or repair treatment?

The perception by many is that hair is alive but it actually is not. Once damaged, hair cannot heal itself, except for new growth at the scalp. Cosmetic and chemical damage are amongst the most common culprits of injury to hair. Over-processed hair loses its natural moisturisers resulting in dry, frizzy hair that is dull in appearance and does not hold its style.
