Hair loss due to stress

What do demanding jobs, long hours, exams, juggling work/life balance, looking after a family, a relationship split and an unexpected surgery all have in common? STRESS!

While everyone knows that stress can take a toll on a person physically and psychologically, it also can lead to other problems including hair loss. A study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that there is a link between stressful life experiences and alopecia (hair loss), a condition that affects 40% of women. Researchers closely examined 100 sets of female twins and found that those who had a history of divorce, diabetes, smoking, and hypertension were more likely to suffer from hair loss, increased hair loss recession and hair thinning.

The same was true for women with higher incomes, demanding jobs, longer hours and multiple children, all of whom exhibited greater levels of overall stress.

When we’re stressed the body simply shuts down production of hair during periods of stress since it is not necessary for survival and instead devotes its energies toward repairing vital body structures. Research has shown that there can be up to a six month delay between a stressful event and the onset of hair loss. It may then take up to three months before there are noticeable signs of hair growing healthily again.
Thus, the cycle of hair loss induced by either an emotional or physical stressful event may last for up to a year. Keeping stress from reaching severe levels, nurturing your physical and emotional health, and treating our mind and body well can all be reflected in our crowning glory.
